IntelPBX® VoiceMail - Automated Attendant

The Automated Attendant (often abbreviated to auto-attendant) is a Voice Response Unit which answers the phone of a business and performs the duties of an operator/receptionist: transferring calls to extensions within the company phone system, screening calls and offering the caller directory assistance to the proper extension.

A typical auto-attendant will answer the phone with a prerecorded greeting message like:

"Hello, this is 'Company Name' company. If you want to dial a specific extension, dial it now. If you want to reach Technical department, dial 1. If you want to reach Sales department, dial 2 ... or wait the transfer to the operator."

Voice Mail provides the basic ability to record, store and manipulate spoken messages. The messages belonging to a single owner are referred to as a mailbox. A mailbox owner will be able to call the voice mail system and, usually by dialing a mailbox number and password, listen to his or her messages, change his/her password or greeting message.
The voice mail system will be able to speak the date and time when the message was recorded, skip through messages, forward messages to other mailboxes or even distribute copies of messages to groups of mailboxes (e.g. all salespeople).

The combination of these two kinds of functionalities give birth to a powerful system: when an extension or department doesn't answer, the caller will enter the voice mail system where he/she can leave a message that will be answered later by the mail box owner.
